MOSCOW, August 22 (Itar-Tass) – Foreign mercenaries fighting in Syria are trying to intimidate the Alawites and Kurds, committing mass murders, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich stated on Thursday.
He cited the situation in Aleppo’s Karm al-Jabal district, which was seized a few days ago by foreign mercenaries of the Jabhat al-Nusra group that is liked to Al-Qaeda, as an example of such actions.
“The actions of the militants were openly terrorist in nature and were aimed at intimidating the Alawite population. According to available data, more than 100 women were raped and murdered, the fate of more than 150 people is still unknown,” Lukashevich said.
“There is a very acute humanitarian tragedy in the northeast Syria areas that are densely inhabited by the Kurds. There is mass exodus of the civilian population from there, seeking refuge in Iraqi Kurdistan from the outrages committed by extremist groups, first of all by the terrorists of Jabhat al-Nusra,” he added.
Previously, the Foreign Ministry reported that Tthe flow of foreign mercenaries in Syria has reached the number that Iraq had in 2005-2007.
