Millions of American taxpayer dollars were allocated to businesses owned by 50 billionaires between 1995 and 2012, according to a study from the Environmental Working Group. The left-leaning organization points out that the subsidies made their way to the billionaires, which Forbes calculates to have a collective net worth of $316 billion, at the same time that Congress slashed millions from the federal food stamp budget. According to the report, US citizens footed the bill for $11.3 million in subsidies to corporations that fully control some aspects of agricultural production, including nearly $15,000 directed to Paul Allen, co-founder of Microsoft. The subsidies were first put into place to help families be able to afford their farmland if they were forced to endure a year of weak crops.
