Fluoride exposure during pregnancy linked to increased risk of childhood neurobehavioral problems, study finds

Nearly three-quarters of the United States population receives drinking water that contains fluoride, a practice that began in 1945 to help prevent tooth decay. But recent studies suggest that fluoride exposure can cause harm to a fetus if consumed during pregnancy, a critical period for brain development. A new study, led by researchers at the Keck School of Medicine of USC and funded in part by the National Institutes of Health, analyzed more than 220 mother-child pairs, collecting data on fluoride levels during pregnancy and child behavior at age three. The researchers found that a 0.68 milligram per liter increase […]

Study explores association between fluoride exposure in pregnancy and neurobehavioral issues in young children

Higher fluoride levels in pregnant women are linked to increased odds of their children exhibiting neurobehavioral problems at age 3, according to a new study led by a University of Florida College of Public Health and Health Professions researcher. The findings, based on an analysis involving 229 mother-child pairs living in a U.S. community with typical fluoride exposure levels for pregnant women in fluoridated regions in North America, appear May 20 in the journal JAMA Network Open. It is believed to be the first U.S.-based study to examine associations of prenatal fluoride exposure with parent-reported child neurobehavioral issues, which include symptoms of […]

Strawberries and Cognitive Improvements Ep. 1189 MAY 2024

A new study from the University of Cincinnati suggests strawberries might be more than just a delicious treat. Researchers gave overweight middle-aged adults a daily powder supplement with the equivalent of one cup of strawberries. After 12 weeks, those on the strawberry powder showed improvements in memory and reduced symptoms of depression. Scientists believe this might be due to the anti-inflammatory properties of anthocyanins, a type of antioxidant found in strawberries. This is exciting preliminary research, but further studies with larger groups and longer durations are needed to confirm these findings. #Strawberry #BrainHealth #MemoryBoost Krikorian, R., Shidler, M. Link between COVID-19 vaccine complication and rare ‘common cold’ blood disease

New research led by Flinders University and international experts is expanding understanding of vaccine-induced immune thrombocytopenia and thrombosis (known as VITT). At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021,VITT emerged as a new disease following adenovirus vector-based vaccines – notably the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine. VITT was found to be caused by an unusually dangerous blood autoantibody directed against a protein termed platelet factor 4 (or PF4).  In separate research in 2023, researchers from Canada, North America, Germany and Italy described a virtually identical disorder with the same PF4 antibody that was fatal in some cases after natural adenovirus (common cold) […]

Unlocking Power: Can Rinsing with Carbs Boost Strength? Episode 1187 MAY 2024

This study investigated a novel strategy to improve deadlift performance: carbohydrate mouth rinsing (CMR). Participants performed Romanian deadlifts after either CMR with a maltodextrin solution or a placebo rinse. Researchers observed significant improvements in eccentric peak power, average force, peak speed, and total work during CMR trials. This suggests CMR might enhance motor performance through brain stimulation triggered by carbohydrate receptors in the mouth. The video will delve deeper into the study’s design, explore potential mechanisms, and discuss the implications for resistance training routines. #CarbohydrateMouthRinse #DeadliftPerformance #ResistanceTraining Yang, T., Shiu, Y., Chen, C., Yu, S., Hsu, Y., & Chiu, C. Cranberry extracts could boost microbiota and counter cardiometabolic diseases

Québec, April 30, 2024 – Cranberry extracts appear to improve intestinal microbiota and help prevent chronic diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. The study of Université Laval and the Institute of Nutrition and Functional Foods (INAF) reported beneficial effects after only four days of use.   Cranberries and berries are associated with multiple health benefits, mainly attributed to their high content of polyphenols, in the form of tannins. They also contain high concentrations of oligosaccharides, small fibres that are thought to contribute to their bioactivity.   The research team, led by Yves Desjardins, professor at the Faculty of Agriculture and Food Sciences, showed […]

Is there an association between HPV vaccination and anti-NMDA receptor encephalitis?

Anti-N-methyl-d-aspartate (Anti-NMDA) receptor encephalitis is an acuteautoimmune disorder that develops both neurological symptoms and psychiatricsymptoms, including hallucination, cognitive disturbance, epilepsy, movementdisorder, and impaired consciousness. This disease may be misdiagnosed at the earlystage as a psychosis disease because of primary psychiatric symptoms. Themisdiagnosis may delay appropriate therapeutic intervention. Most patients withanti-NMDA receptor encephalitis respond to immunotherapy [1, 2].The pathology of this disease is an autoimmunity reaction that anti-NMDAantibodies attack patients’ brains. Tumors might induce anti-NMDA receptorimmune responses due to cross-reactivity with NMDA receptors in teratomascontaining brain cells. Ovarian teratomas could trigger anti-NMDA receptorencephalitis, and other tumors including neuroendocrine tumors, mediastinalteratomas, testicular […]
